Welker opens up about concussions, life after football, and Tom Brady

BOSTON — "I think people know better than to talk bad about Tom Brady in front of me.  That's my boy", says Wes Welker.  The veteran receiver has not been a Patriot for three seasons but he still stays in touch with Tom Brady and still considers him a great friend.  " We stay in touch with each other, keep up with each  other and make sure our families are good and all those good things", said Welker on Tuesday afternoon in Boston.   The same can't be said for Welker's relationship with Bill Belichick.  On Tuesday morning, Welker told 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher and Rich: " I spoke with him (Belichick) right before I signed with Denver (in 2013)".  Later in the interview he added, "I don't really see any reason to"

Welker was at the Liberty Hotel on Tuesday representing Dr. Robert Leonard ("The Hair Doctor") along with two other Dr. Leonard clients, current Patriot Rob Ninkovitch and former NFL fullback Chris Gronkowski, older brother of Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski.

In our conversation Welker talked about his foundation, life after football, his concussion issues and more.  But the majority of the conversation was about Tom Brady.

Welker is one of only a handful of receivers to have played with both Peyton Manning and with Tom Brady.  " A lot of similarities as far as the way they handle things off and on the field, their accountability, their professionalism and what they do day in and day out to make them great", said Welker.

Having not played with Brady for three years now, Welker has an even greater appreciation for what makes Tom Brady a great football player.  " That guy wants to compete at everything. It's what you love to see in your quarterback and in a competitor.  I mean you look around the league and a guy misses a pass and they say , so what I missed a pass.  With him it's not OK", said Welker.

One thing that's not OK with Welker is when the subject of Deflategate comes up and when Brady is called a cheater. " I think people know better than to talk bad about him in front of me.  That's my boy", says Welker.

Welker, an Oklahoma native was not happy with "his boy" recently when Brady led a meeting with Kevin Durant trying to get him to join the Celtics.  "I didn't really understand why he was doing it?  I was like, does he really care about the Celtics?  Something tells me somebody dragged him into that deal.  I didn't like seeing it because I'm from Oklahoma City" , says Welker
