WASHINGTON, D.C. — Boston Red Sox left-hander Chris Sale will start on the mound for the All-Star Game for the American League, his third consecutive All-Star Game start.

"The proof is in the numbers" said AL Manager A.J. Hinch. "He is truly a special pitcher in our league."

Sale is the third pitcher to start three consecutive All-Star Games, following Lefty Gomez and Robin Roberts.

Red Sox teammate Mookie Betts will lead things off for the AL All-Stars, while DH J.D. Martinez will bat clean up.

Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer will take the mound for the National League.

Sale and Scherzer were the starting pitchers in last year's All-Star Game.

The All-Star Game will be played Tuesday in Washington, D.C.
