BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox announced Thursday that they have exercised the 2017 options of pitcher Clay Buchholz and designated hitter David Ortiz.
Buchholz, 32, has a career 3.96 ERA with an 81-61 record and 899 strikeouts over 10 seasons with the Red Sox. Buchholz is slated to make $13.5 million in 2017.
Ortiz, 40, is still expected to retire. The team exercised his option as a formality despite his well known plans to hang it up after the 2016 season.
The Sox declined the option for journeyman catcher Ryan Hanigan and reinstated Pablo Sandoval, Blake Swihart, Carson Smith, and Brandon Workman from the 60-day disabled list.
