FOX Sports NFL reporter Mike Garofalo has reported Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman broke a bone in his foot during the Patriots win over the Giants Sunday afternoon.
Garofalo also tweeted, "Julian Edelman's injury is to his fifth metatarsal, believed to be a true Jones fracture. Possible return for playoff."
ESPN later reported Edelman will undergo surgery on Monday.
Edelman was witnessed on crutches with his left foot in a boot following the Patriots win. He was injured on the final play of the first quarter, tended to on the Patriots sideline and then further diagnosed in the locker room.
Edelman caught four passes for 53 yards in the first quarter. He leads the team with 57 receptions this season and has scored seven touchdowns.
If the Patriots decide to hold out hope for a postseason return for Edelman, they'll be a bit hamstrung for the remaining regular season games. He would have to remain on the 53-man roster and be included among the inactives on game days until he's physically able to return.
