Brockton firefighter Matt Parziale makes cut at US Open

NEW YORK — Brockton firefighter Matt Parziale has made the cut after two rounds of the 2018 US Open and his boyhood idol, Tiger Woods has not.

Parziale shot a 3 over 73 on Saturday and after his 74 on Thursday, Parziale sits at +7 after two rounds.  The cut line was +8.  Tiger Woods finished his two rounds at +10, so he will not be playing this weekend.

Parziale, the reigning U.S. Mid-Amateur champion, birdied 18 on Saturday to finish at one shot below the cut line. And as he stood over that final putt, Matt knew what was going on.

" I knew where I stood. I made an unfortunate bogey on 17, but I had a good look at birdie on 18 and I was very happy that went in", said Parziale.

"It's probably the biggest putt I've had to make a cut, but I've made putts to win tournaments so you just try and go through your process and I was happy I was able to do that and put a good roll on it".

After missing the cut at the Masters in April, being at this point is special for Matt. But he is here because he has earned his way here.

"I don't know why you wouldn't dream and try to do the best you can,'' Parziale said. "Anything is possible. The work you put in, and I'm proud of the work I put in. It's been up and down, but I've always enjoyed trying to get better.''

As for his chances this weekend Parziale is going to give it his best shot. "Golf's hard. I mean, this game is crazy. I'm happy with the way I played and looking forward to competing this weekend.
