Yearslong renovation of Longfellow Bridge finally complete

BOSTON — Years of construction on the Longfellow Bridge has finally come to an end.

The more than $300 million renovation started in 2013.

Rehabbing the 111-year-old bridge was supposed to cost about $250 million and reopen two years ago, but plan changes caused further delays.

On Thursday morning, the bridge connecting popular sections of Boston and Cambridge reopened with:

  • Two lanes of traffic into Boston
  • One lane into Cambridge
  • Dedicated bike lanes in each direction separated by barriers
  • Sidewalks
  • New tracks for the MBTA Red Line

However, not all cyclists are reportedly happy with the setup of the bike lanes. They had asked for more space and one fewer lane of car traffic, but the state denied that request.

MassDOT says 28,000 motor vehicles crossed the Charles River every day before the closure.
