Woman throws coins into jet engine for good luck, delays flight

SHANGHAI — An 80-year-old woman wanted to ensure good luck for her flight from Shanghai to Guangzhou, China, so she threw coins into the jet engine.

That ended up delaying the plane for five hours.

The Independent reports that the passenger was boarding the flight with her family when she threw nine coins at the aircraft's engine turbine to make the "blessings."

Other passengers, who saw what happened, alerted airline staff.

Officials inspected the engine and all of the 150 passengers were taken off the flight.

Eight of the coins missed the engine, airport officials said, but one did land inside the engine, reports The Independent.

There was concern over what could happen if that single coin was sucked into the engine's mechanisms.

The 80-year-old was detained by police and questioned.

The Independent reports that the woman practices Buddhism, according to her neighbors.
