BOSTON — A woman laced up her skates and rolled through 12 different states in order to get to a Boston hospital.

Seven years ago, doctors at Brigham and Women's saved her husband's life after a devastating motorcycle crash in Tewksbury.

To raise awareness, Merideth McDonald took on a crazy challenge – go from Florida to Massachusetts on rollerblades.

It was a nearly 1,500 mile journey full of emotion, excitement and determination.

She finally made it to Brigham and Women’s Friday morning, with her husband, Nathan, friends, doctors

"This is where our journey with brain injury began, it changed our entire life,” she told FOX25.

When Nathan left the hospital, Merideth started a foundation to raise awareness about traumatic brain injuries.

The Big Life Brain Injury Group helps survivors find places to learn new therapies and it lists activities they can do with other people who have similar injuries.

"We're here to make life bigger for that population,” she said.

In addition, the family is calling attention to the urgent need for blood donors. After Nathan’s crahs, he needed 30 transfusions to save his life.

The McDonald’s may live in Florida, but they still have a close connection to Boston, and even named their daughter’s middle name “Brigham.”
