Winchester police order dog quarantined after it attacks, kills puppy

WINCHESTER, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A puppy, mauled by another dog in a Winchester neighborhood. Police are now on the case, because the dog has yet to be quarantined. And this isn't the first animal complaint involving that address.

"I was terrified," said Dafna Leonard. "I thought he was coming after me."

In her arms one second, in the mouth a bull mastiff the next. Her puppy never had a chance.

"He was biting him, wrestling him, and throwing him on the ground," she said.

Chase was an 8-pound puppy who Dafna and Brian Leonard say was a new addition to their family, adored by their two young daughters.

"I made them jump through so many hoops to show me they were ready and were doing a great job with him," Brian Leonard said.

While walking Chase in the neighborhood on Sunday on nearby Squire Road, Dafna says a large bull mastiff snatched the pup, and tore him apart.

Dafna says she broke the news to her girls as gently as she could.

But it wasn't until after news of the attack spread through the neighborhood that the Leonards say they learned there had with problems with other dogs at that address. before

John Grausam lives three homes down from the Leonards. He says three years ago, a rottweiler broke free from the same property, and nearly killed Simon, his Tibetan terrier.

Neighbors say the aggressive dogs belong to the homeowner's family members.

Winchester police have received multiple complaints about the bull mastiff that killed the Leonard's dog, and if it's not surrendered for quarantine, they will take legal action.

It's too late for the Leonard family, but they said they don't want it happening to anyone else.
