Walpole's 'Ice Man' gives advice on ice safety

WALPOLE, Mass. — With below freezing temperatures this week, it can be tempting to head out on the ice.

But one man in Walpole is reminding people to be safe before lacing up their skates.

Dan Ryan is known as the "ice man" in Walpole.

He headed out Wednesday to check the safety of Turner Pond.

"You need to know your surroundings," Ryan said. "You need to assume all ice is unsafe ice."

Ryan has volunteered to measure the ice in Walpole for the past seven years. In that time, no one has ever fallen in.

He says there's three things to remember if you want to head out onto the ice: know how deep the body of water is, don't skate or walk onto the ice alone, and get down and spread out if you think you're about to fall in.

His other biggest piece of advice is to pay attention to the weather forecast, to know how cold the temperatures are going to be.
