Viral photo of man cradling arthritic dog in Lake Superior helps raise more than $25,000

(FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - A picture of a man cradling his 19-year-old arthritic dog in Lake Superior touched the hearts of millions when it was posted online last month.

The photo was taken by Hannah Stonehouse Hudson and it inspired the dog's owner, John Unger, of Wisconsin, to launch the Schoep Legacy Foundation, which helps low-income families care for their aging canines, the Daily Mail reports.

Unger says Schoep's Legacy Foundation has raised more than $25,000 since he and his dog, Schoep, were photographed by a friend who posted the image to Facebook.

Arthritis and hip dysplasia settled into Schoep's joints. Unger takes Schoep into Lake Superior every night to ease his pain. With no pressure on his body, Schoep quickly falls asleep in Unger's arms.

Before the photo was taken, Unger and his veterinarian had considered putting Schoep down. But through the unsolicited donations from people who saw the photo, Unger was able to treat Schoep and extend his life and now Schoep is doing incredible.

Unger and his friends have a Facebook page that provides updates on Schoep's condition.
