LADSON, S.C. — Two people are recovering from injuries after a dispute outside a South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles building escalated into gunfire, authorities said.
According to WCBD-TV and WCSC-TV, the incident occurred about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the DMV office on Wimberly Drive in Ladson. An altercation involving at least two people began in the parking lot and ultimately moved inside the building, Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis told the news outlets. One person then opened fire, striking a male who appeared to be the intended target and a woman, described as a bystander doing business there, Lewis said.
Crews rushed both of the victims to a nearby hospital for treatment, WCBD reported. Their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, according to WCSC.
Deputies are still searching for the suspected shooter, who fled after the incident, WCBD reported. Investigators described him as a thin, 18- to 25-year-old Black man who stands about 6 feet tall, according to the news outlet.
On Tuesday night, the Sheriff’s Office wrote in a Facebook post that deputies have “located the suspect vehicle and identified the owner.” The post did not mention any arrests.
