If you have jalapenos or products that include the pepper, make sure they’re not part of a nationwide recall affecting dozens of states.

The peppers were grown in Sinaloa, Mexico, and distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors to wholesalers and restaurants, the Food and Drug Administration said.

Several companies, including Taylor Fresh Foods, have recalled products containing jalapenos.

The FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are working with state and local agencies to investigate the multistate outbreak of Salmonella Javiana infections linked to the jalapenos.

So far, 431 people have been confirmed infected with the Salmonella strain in 32 states, including Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Washington. Of those, 57 have been hospitalized, with no deaths.

Most people ate at what were called “Mexican-style” restaurants before getting sick, including Chipotle and Qdoba, from June 14 to July 16. The latest data shows the last illness onset was Aug. 2.

Because of the link, not only have jalapenos themselves been recalled, but also other products that contain the pepper.

Jalapeno poppers sold at Costco locations in Texas were also recalled, according to an FDA notice.

If you have the recalled items, you should not eat them and return them to the place of purchase.
