Hyundai Motor America is recalling more than 95,000 Genesis luxury vehicles in the United States, citing anti-lock brake system issues that could result in an electrical short or vehicle fire.
According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, two separate recalls affect 94,646 Hyundai Genesis sedans from the 2015-16 model years and 2017-20 Genesis G80 mid-size sedans as well as an estimated 550 Genesis G70 compact sedans from the 2019-21 model years.
In its safety reports filed with the administration, the South Korean automaker said the anti-lock brake system modules included on the affected vehicles “could malfunction and cause an electrical short over time, potentially resulting in an engine compartment fire.” The reports also note that the fire hazard is present whether the vehicles are being driven or parked.
The company stated in its reports that it is unaware of any crashes or injuries related to either recall, but did note that two reported vehicle fires have been linked to the larger recall in the United States and three reported vehicle fires have been linked to the G70 recall in foreign markets.
In turn, Hyundai recommends any owner opting to continue driving the vehicles park outside and away from structures until the module anti-lock brake module fuse is replaced by dealerships.
Vehicle owners and dealerships will be notified in early May about the recall, the company stated in the documents.
