Tobin Bridge toll system changes begin Monday

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Starting Monday, your money's no good at the Tobin Bridge tolls.

It's not that the Massachusetts Department of Transportation has decided to let drivers without an E-Z Pass off the hook, but instead, those who pay cash for the toll will now get a bill in the mail.

Beginning Monday, July 21, MassDOT will activate its new, all-electronic tolling system. The system remains the same for those who pay through the E-Z Pass transponder system, but will change the way drivers with cash will pay.

Drivers, even those who normally pay with cash or coins, now are instructed not to stop as they drive through the toll. If a car has no transponder, the cameras that read the E-Z Pass transponders will take a picture of the car's license plate, and send a bill for the toll amount to the address listed in the Registry of Motor Vehicle's records.

It was not clear how long drivers would have to pay the toll upon receipt of the invoice.

Those who have E-Z Pass transponders will continue to pay the discounted $2.50 toll rate. A bill for $3 will be sent to those who do not have the transponders. Vehicles with commercial license plates who up until Monday paid cash will be charged an extra 50 cents.
