LAWRENCE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- The 13-year-old girl hit and killed by a train in Lawrence Friday has been identified.
At about 4:15 p.m., Jenaira Fuentes was hit by an MBTA commuter rail train near Inman Street, the Essex County District Attorney's office confirmed. She was pronounced dead as a result of her injuries.
Residents say there is a hole in the fence that leads to a cut through to get to busy Route 114 and the city's high school.
"This is the path that they take to school because it's faster than going all the way around," one neighbor said.
The only problem is that cut through goes right across the tracks. As a commuter rail train barreled through Lawrence just after 4 p.m., warning bells and all, a 13-year-old took her final steps over the train tracks.
Lawrence police say Fuentes and a friend were crossing the tracks near Inman Street where a stationary train waited. The pair cut between two cars of the stationary train and Fuentes did not see the oncoming train as she crossed the tracks and was hit. They were on their way to the Frost School.
Transit police detectives along with representatives from the Essex County District Attorney's office are investigating.
