Teen bicyclist seriously injured after being hit by car in Fitchburg

FITCHBURG, Mass. — A teenage boy in Fitchburg has been taken to a hospital in serious condition after being hit by a car while riding his bicycle.

The crash happened Thursday afternoon on Boutelle Street. The 17-year-old cyclist was flown to a Worcester hospital by helicopter where he remains in critical condition.

A preliminary investigation reveals the teen rode his bike straight through a stop sign and crashed into the side of the passing SUV. The driver immediately stopped to help, police said.

“She called the police. She stood by, waited until the police arrived. She was very cooperative with us. Obviously, she was very shaken up and scared,” Fitchburg Police Chief Ernest Martineau said.

Neighbors who live nearby heard the commotion and rushed out to help as well. Police canvassed the neighborhood and were able to locate the boy's family.

“As a parent, I was nervous because we didn't know who this child was, and I could see my own child there. So every police officer was in a frenzy trying to find the parent,” Martineau said.

As police reconstruct the crash, everyone in the community is hoping the boy pulls through.
