MATTAPOISETT, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A young woman from Mattapoisett just turned a corner in her fight against cancer only to be robbed of something she says she can't live without.
Alexis Morel had her car stolen near her college in Springfield before heading to Boston for cancer treatment. She stopped for gas around noon Thursday, put the keys on the floor, paid and when she turned around her car was gone.
"I was blank, I did not even know what to think, I just cried," Morel said.
The 18-year-old is an amputee who lost her leg. She has a prosthetic, but still uses the crutches that she says she decorated herself and had signed by a Celtics player. The crutches were in the car, and she wants them back. Her laptop, school books, and handicap placard were also taken.
She notified Springfield police and says officers never got out of the car or got video surveillance from gas station. Hours later her mother was told by detectives that the officers dropped the ball because they didn't write an incident report, file an auto theft report or let other officers know they were looking for a 2006 dark green Mazda with Massachusetts Jimmy Fund plates.
Late Thursday she got a ping notification with the Find My Mac app on her laptop and it was not far from her in Springfield, so she called police.
