Spencer Police search for armed man hiding in the woods

SPENCER, Mass. — Police in Spencer spent hours searching for an armed man who ran off into the woods.

The search began at around 6 p.m. on Sunday and ended at around 9 p.m. It is still unclear whether an arrest was made, but it was an extensive search, both on the ground and from the air.

A resident on Paxton Road called police after a man believed to be armed and dressed in camo ran off into the woods after an altercation inside the home.

Police say they are searching for 38-year-old Steven Patchen of Warren. They also say Patchen is wanted for violating a restraining order and is believed to be suicidal and armed with a long gun.

Police say they do not believe Patchen poses a danger to others.

Paxton Road was closed while search efforts were underway. Massachusetts State Police were also seen surrounding nearby streets.

A SWAT team was also called in to aid with the search. Several surrounding communities also offered to help with search efforts.

Police are working to figure out what the initial threat was.
