Shark found often in Massachusetts waters recorded near Scituate

SCITUATE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) - Meet Mara, a 12 foot great white shark who has been in Massachusetts waters over the past few weeks.

Video was taken by the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy just 10 days ago, as they tagged Mara off of South Beach in Chatham.

The next day she was detected in Provincetown.

But this weekend, Mara wasn't hanging out in the waters of the Cape, but on the South Shore.

Around 5 a.m. Saturday, Mara was detected by a buoy with a receiver in Scituate.

“Some people have said that they've seen seals off Scituate,” Marianne Long from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy said. “Usually it's some sort of food source that's bringing them.”

Long made the discovery when she uploaded the brand new receiver's data.

The receiver is one of a handful put in near South Shore beaches, including one off Plymouth and another near Duxbury.

“We know that they have been in that area but what we're trying to do with the receivers is expand the research,” Long said. “So then we can learn more about where the sharks with tags are traveling to.”

The detection comes just one week after another tagged shark was detected off the coast of Marshfield.

Long says sharks have been swimming off South Shore waters for longer than some might think.

“One of the earliest documented white sharks off of Scituate was actually in the 1830's,” she said.

The news is downright scary to some families.

“I've never heard of a shark near Scituate and it kind of makes me a little nervous,” Billy Hood said.

But not everyone's surprised.

The O'Connor family said they've seen some signs that sharks might be on the way.

“In front of our house we saw a seal swimming and it was there for a couple of hours. We went to dinner and it was still there after,” Ellie O’Connor said. “I thought that they were going to bring the sharks over.”
