ANDOVER, Mass. — Massachusetts state Sen. Barbara L'Italien (D - Andover) is the latest candidate to officially enter the race for the state's third congressional district.
The Andover Democrat promised in a statement on Monday that if elected she would take on big issues facing the country and families in the district, which includes the Merrimack Valley cities of Lowell and Lawrence.
U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas, who has represented the district for 10 years, is not seeking re-election.
As many as 10 Democrats and two Republicans plan to vie for the seat.

L'Italien served four terms in the Massachusetts House before being elected to the Senate in 2010.
She currently lives in a section of Andover that is just outside the third district, but there's no requirement in state law that candidates reside in the district.
