WEST DENNIS, Mass. — It's been a long road to recovery for an endangered sea turtle that washed up on Truro last year, but she is finally back in the ocean.
The Kemp Ridley's turtle was found last December hypothermic and nearly dead. The New England Aquarium wasn't sure if the late adolescent turtle was going to make it.
Slowly, the turtle's appetite increased and she went from an emaciated 40 pounds to a healthy 55 pounds. During her eight months of recovery she battled pneumonia and a chronically abscessed and severely enlarged front flipper as well as an eye infection.
On Thursday evening, the turtle was released at West Dennis Beach by rescue staff and volunteers.
The turtle has been outfitted with a satellite tag to track it's movements; it's very unusual for a Kemp Ridley turtle to be near the Cape in December.
