Roslindale water main break partially floods several surrounding homes

ROSLINDALE, Mass. — Torrents of water bubbled up from what looked like a small geyser, the water coming from a busted water main on Hyde Park Avenue in Roslindale late Tuesday morning.

“When I pulled up, I just know that it was like a mess,” said Vanessa Washington, whose home three doors down from the break was flooded.

She was not alone. Several house in the low-lying area near Stoney Brook were inundated. The fast-moving water poured down driveways and flooded basements like Helen Loney’s.

“I came out, and the water was running down the street and going down the driveway and it was up on the sidewalk coming in the yard,” Loney said.

The water did the same to Washington’s basement as it made her three-family like an island as water surrounded the home.

“There was water in the front, there was water in the back. There are two houses down behind us that are flooded from their basements,” Washington said.

A National Grid utility crew was working in the area when the main somehow broke apart.

“They’ve been working on the street for maybe the past week or so and I guess they just knocked a main water line,” Washington said.

Loney said the water ran for more than 30 minutes before it was shut off, and that gave plenty of time for it to fill up her basement.

“Just leaked in the cellar. I have about a foot of water,” Loney said.

Her backyard was worse.

“But it went down the yard. I had more than three or four feet of water in the yard,” she said.

Items down there are now waterlogged and damaged as they are next door. Neighbors are now drying out as they salvage what they can.
