38 Studios, which was founded and fun by Curt Schilling, was liquidated in 2013 after financial mishaps and most IP was sold, except for Kingdoms of Amalur.
Amalur was a well-reviewed and critically praised game, but it didn't sell enough copies to keep the company afloat as it prepared to release an online game in 2013.
Schilling moved 38 Studios to Providence from Massachusetts in 2010 in exchange for a $75 million loan guarantee. It ran out of money and went bankrupt less than two years later.
The legal wrangling since then has included a lawsuit against a number of parties that ultimately settled for a total of about $61 million, and a grand jury that concluded its work in 2015.
Many employees were left on the hook for unpaid bills and unpaid mortgages that were supposed to be covered by the company.
