(MyFoxBoston.com) A golden retriever has become a surrogate mother to a litter of endangered African wild dogs.
The three tiny puppies, one male and two females, were born on Friday morning to an inexperienced mother who showed a lack of maternal care, so officials at the Oklahoma City Zoo decided to intervene.
Zoo caregivers began the process of finding a surrogate mother for the litter, soon coming across Lilly, a retired search and rescue dog living in Wichita, Kansas. Lilly recently gave birth to a single puppy that will now be raised alongside the African wild dog pups.
Zoo officials say that all of the puppies are doing well and will remain at the Zoo's animal hospital under veterinary care and out of public view.
