Red Sox radio announcer Joe Castiglione said it best.
"Welcome to the Bresh Box."
What used to be the Boston Red Sox' press box will forever be known as the "Bresh Box" in honor of the late Dick Bresciani. Bresciani began working for the Red Sox organization in 1972 and in less than a decade was promoted to team's public relations director. He continued to ascend the ranks throughout the years and in 2003 was named the Red Sox' Vice President/Publications and Archives.
"He was the institutional memory of this place," team president Larry Lucchino said. "He educated several generations of Red Sox' executives."
The Boston Globe's Dan Shaughnessy has written seven books on the Red Sox, and he even admitted he went to Bresciani before sending them to editors.
"I've written six or seven books about the Red Sox and generally, I'd let him see them first," Shaughnessy said. "Not for editorial control because he didn't like some of the tone but for the facts. He'd say 'there are hundreds of errors in here!' But after it got by Bresh, you knew you could send it off to the publishers and you were dead on with all the facts."
Although Bresciani wasn't on the field, nobody took losses harder than he did, according to Castiglione.
"Nobody took defeat harder than Bresh," he said. "People tell me they can tell how the Red Sox are doing by the sound of my voice. With Bresh you could not only see it in his face, but in his whole body language. You knew if the Red Sox were winning just by seeing him walk down the hall."
Bresciani was liked by everyone, from members of the media to the players to front office executives, according to Lucchino.
Every member of the Red Sox Hall of Fame has a plaque and "Bresh" read every plaque out loud. And that includes his own.
"He's the only member who voiced his own track," said Castiglione.
Monday's Opening Day ceremony with Pete Frates and the Richard family was emotional, but today's events were just as important.
"Opening Day was special but today was just as special," Lucchino said.
