Pregnant woman suffers broken ribs after hit and run in Lawrence

LAWRENCE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A pregnant woman was injured after a hit and run Tuesday in Lawrence.

Nefertiti Farmer is recovering at Mass. General Hospital with fractured ribs and injuries to her shoulder and hip after the incident Tuesday morning on Broadway. Witnesses said Farmer was crossing the street at a stoplight when a pickup truck traveling southbound hit the young mother.

"We just heard, like a boom!" said Alina Espinal. "He was running over her, like you could hear the bumps."

Farmer told FOX25 that she thought she lost her baby, and that she was going to die.

"I thought he was going to slow down for me. I kept walking, and then I felt the hit. The first bump, I was pretty much like, 'my baby is gone.' The second bump, I was like 'I'm gonna die,'" she said.

Farmer, who is 2 months pregnant and a mother to a 4-year-old son, said she remained conscious after impact and watched the truck speed away.

"He didn't slow down, he just kept going, and it boggles my mind that he didn't stop to check on me," she said.

Police said witnesses were unable to provide a license plate but said the suspect vehicle is a black or dark blue pickup truck with scrap metal hanging off the bed. The truck should have some front end damage, according to investigators.

Farmer said she is happy to have survived, but worries that the driver is still on the road.

"My baby is still alive, that's a miracle," Farmer said.
