Porch collapse survivor traumatized after colleague dies

BOSTON, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- [if gte mso 9]> Investigators are looking into a construction accident that has left one worker dead in Jamaica Plain on Tuesday. A second worker saw it all unfold, and shared his story.

The incident happened behind the home here at 89 Forest Hills St. Two men were repairing a third floor deck when it collapsed and one of the men fell to the ground. The survivor, 44-year-old William McCarthy, is traumatized.

McCarthy has worked construction for most of his life. Tuesday was supposed to be another day at work here 89 Forest Street, when suddenly it all went wrong.

"It happened so fast. We were both on our knees, so there was nothing to grab on to," he said.
He and his longtime colleague were repairing the third floor deck when it collapsed, sending panels flying to the ground. William and his friend were sent falling too.

"Steve was basically over the edge nailing the face of it, you know, and we were side by side and he fell in a different direction, then I fell."

Skyfox was over the scene as the chaos unfolded. Emergency crews rushed the victim to a nearby hospital, but doctors could not save him.
"I was a mess you know, I was hoping he'd be alright but he wasn't," William said.
Investigators have been combing the scene for clues as to what went wrong, while William is grappling with his own questions.

"I'm gonna miss him, it really hasn't set in yet," he said. "I still can't believe he's gone. It just all happened so soon."

Boston police, OSHA and the Inspectional Services Department are all investigating.

ISD said a permit was issued for the work but it was only granted Monday. Work had been going on for more than a week.
