Police: Woman locks herself in Domino's fridge to avoid arrest

WEYMOUTH, Mass. — A woman was eventually arrested Thursday after locking herself in a Domino's refrigerator in order to avoid arrest, said police.

On Thursday evening, Walmart loss prevention employees observed a woman trying to conceal items under a blanket that was covering a baby in a carriage, said police. The employees allegedly saw the woman try to leave the store with the hidden items; when confronted, she returned the items and said she didn't "have time for this."

The woman was also with a young boy. At this point, police said she told him to run and they bolted out of the store, toward Washington Street, all the while pushing the baby carriage.

She continued across Washington Street, navigating the busy traffic, said police. Officers approached her inside the nearby Domino's and she allegedly once again ran, leaving the two children in the waiting area of the restaurant.

Seth Hockert-Lotz, a Domino's franchisee, said, "They didn't appear to understand what was going on, just as we didn't understand what was going on."

Police said the woman, identified as 47-year-old Sandra Savage, went into the back of the Domino's and locked herself in the walk-in refrigerator. Police said they tried to convince her to come out, but they had to force open the door. She was then arrested.

Police said Savage told officers that she ran and hid in the refrigerator because “she knew she was going to be arrested."

Savage, of Weymouth, was charged with shoplifting, reckless endangerment of a child, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and malicious damage to property.

The two children were taken to the Weymouth Police Station where officers cared for them until the Department of Child and Families responded. It was learned that one of the children was her grandson and the other was a friend's son.

A woman who answered the door at Savage's Weymouth home Friday afternoon declined an interview, but through the glass door, assured us that the children are safe.
