METHUEN, Mass. — Methuen Police are warning residents and business owners of a recent National Grid scam. Police say at least three local businesses have fallen victim to the phone scam, costing them hundreds of dollars.
HOW THE SCAM WORKS
The scammers call and claim to work for National Grid. They demand payment of past balances and threaten to immediately shut-off service unless the victim wires them money or pays them with a pre-paid credit card.
In some cases, police say the scammers tell the victim that their meter is faulty and has to be replaced.
WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR
A real National Grid employee would never ask a customer to make a payment via gift card, pre-paid card, or money order.
Beware:
the scammers may be able to confirm the last four digits of your Social Security number. They're also able to "spoof" their phone number, which is a trick that makes the number on your caller ID look like it's actually coming from National Grid, even if it isn't.
If you think you may have been scammed, call the Methuen Police Department at (978) 983-8698.
