WAREHAM, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – A 33-year-old Wareham man was taken into custody following a standoff on Ladd Avenue Monday.
Michael Mendes had reportedly barricaded himself inside 4B Ladd Avenue at about 2:45 p.m.
According to the Wareham Police Department, the incident was the result of a custody issue involving a 19-month-old child. Mendes reportedly told family members he intended to harm himself with a gun.
The Wareham Police Department, as well as Massachusetts State Police troopers, responded to the incident and closed Route 6 from Route 28 to Sandwich Road until the incident was resolved.
Police said Mendes put the child outside the home and barricaded himself inside the home. The child was not harmed.
Authorities reportedly continued to speak with Mendes by telephone, but he refused to come out and said he had weapons. He indicated he wished to be harmed by police.
At about 6 p.m., authorities deployed gas cartridges in the home in order to get Mendes out. He was taken into police custody without further incident and turned over to the Wareham Police Department for further investigation.
Criminal charges have not yet been applied.
