Police: Mother charged with murder after throwing daughter into Tampa river

TAMPA, F.L. — Tampa Police have charged a mother with first-degree murder after they say she tossed her 4-year-old daughter into a river where she drowned.

Shakayla Denson, 26, has been arrested and charged with First Degree Felony Murder, Aggravated Child Abuse and Grand Theft Auto.

Witnesses who called 911 around 4 p.m. Thursday reported seeing a woman toss a child into the Hillsborough River.

Within 30 minutes, divers found Je'Hyrah Daniels about 75 feet from shore. Daniels was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police said they found Denson walking near the scene and took her into custody.

According to police, Denson stole a car from a repair shop and then drove to the river. Witnesses said she waded halfway into the river with Daniels, threw the child into the water and then waded out.

An autopsy will determine Daniels’ exact cause death.
