CHELMSFORD, Mass. — A Rhode Island man wanted in Vermont in connection with a domestic violence incident has been arrested after leading police on a chase through New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
Around 2:15 Sunday morning, New Hampshire State Police tried to stop a reported stolen vehicle on Interstate 89 in Warner. The driver, Gregory Coffey of Providence, who police believed was armed and possibly intoxicated, wouldn’t stop and led police on a pursuit onto I-93, then on the Everett Turnpike toward Nashua.
Nashua police helped deploy spike strips, but Coffey continued to drive on a rim into Tyngsboro, Mass. Tyngsboro police deployed another set of spike strips and the car eventually stopped just over the Chelmsford Town Line.
Officers found Coffey suffering from what they believed were self-inflicted cuts. He was taken to a Boston-area hospital to be treated for serious injuries.
Coffey is charged with being a fugitive from justice in multiple states: New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and three counts in Vermont. He is also charged with receiving a stolen motor vehicle, operating recklessly to endanger, failure to stop for police, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and giving a false name to police.
Coffey is being held by Chelmsford police pending treatment and arraignment. He will then be extradited to answer the charges from the other state agencies.
