Officials work to protect Piping Plover population on Cape

CAPE COD, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Piping Plovers are showing up more often on Cape Cod beaches and federal officials are trying to protect the endangered species.

US Fish and Wildlife officials are in the process of figuring out how off-road vehicles can operate on Orleans beaches without them harming the Plover chicks who are unable to fly. Officials are hoping that people can continue to enjoy the Cape without endangering the Piping Plover population.

The shorebirds were put on the endangered species list in 1986. Conservation efforts have worked over the past 28 years as the population has quadrupled.
