Racist, anti-Semitic messages found at Cambridge school

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Messages of hate have been found in the bathrooms at a local school over the past two days. In all, school officials are investigating five incidents.

The swastikas and racist graffiti were found in two different boys’ bathrooms and in the girls' bathroom at Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School.

“My teachers were saying there were some swastikas and some hurtful comments against a certain group of people,” sophomore Antonio Garcia Beners said.

Dr. Kenneth Salim, the Cambridge School superintendent, said the swastikas, hateful messages and graffiti were found on five separate occasions. They were found on Tuesday and Wednesday in the boys’ bathroom. Thursday morning, two more messages were found in the girls’ bathrooms.

One of the swastikas was accompanied by a message that read, in part, "the power lost of this sign will be made great again by President Trump."

“This is incredibly disturbing. It's at odds with our values at the high school and what we focus on,” Dr. Salim said.

The superintendent would not get into any other details about their investigation. We know that school officials and students are being interviewed about this matter.

As teachers explained to students that the graffiti is unacceptable, parents were also notified of the incidents in a letter.

“I live in a diverse community, they're not supposed to be doing this. It doesn't fit with our city or state, what we are trying to strive for in the school,” freshman Sam Bebergal said.
