NH woman saving family thousands of dollars a year with "extreme couponing"

A New Hampshire woman is using some of her mother's old coupon techniques to save her family thousands of dollars a year.

Jennifer Foisey lost her job as a nanny three years ago, and turned to an old family hobby to keep her family afloat.

"My mother was an extreme couponer in the 90's," Foisey said.

Now, Foisey's home is starting to build up with all sorts of items.

"I always have certain things on hand," Foisey said. "Anything that doesn't go bad, I have on a shelf. My house is sort of like a grocery store."

Now, as the days of snipping up store flyers disappear, the digital coupon age has made saving money easy for Foisey.

"A lot of other people do the leg work for you," Foisey said. "You can go on Facebook or people's websites, and they pair them up. All you have to do is put two together, and go to the store and get the deals."

Recently, a store even had to pay her when her coupons went over the value of her cart of groceries.

"The woman at the register was really excited and really confused," Foisey said. "She was gonna go home and tell her grandmother."

Foisey uses the coupons for more than just groceries, expanding her reach to clothing stores, restaurants and vacations outside of New England.

While she doesn't consider the hobby to be a job, the money she saves almost equals a part-time salary.

"It's something I look forward to,' Foisey said. "It's something I think about pretty much everyday, and I'm sort of known for it."

Last year, she save enough money to buy a motorcycle.

"It allowed me to pay for a motorcycle riding class, getting my permit and buying the motorcycle," Foisey said.

Now, Foisey's hoping she can pass on the family skill to her unborn son, just like her mother did for her.

"A lot of extreme couponers tend to be women," Foisey said. "I think it would be extra fun for me to teach a boy, who's gonna grow into a man, how to be self-sufficient, how to safe money."
