CONCORD, N.H. — Thomas Knight of New Hampshire now holds the state record for catching the largest lake trout.

Knight, a resident of Meredith, New Hampshire, caught the enormous lake trout while ice fishing on Big Diamond Pond in West Stewartstown on Tuesday, February 25.

The lake trout weighed in at 37.65 pounds beating the record of 28 pounds established in 1958.

The fish was inspected and verified by Andy Schafermeyer from the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.

“Most state records, when bested, are done so by only a few ounces. Knight’s fish shattered the old record by over 9 pounds. This fish is now the largest lake trout caught in all of New England. I’m glad he got it, this couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy,” said Schafermeyer.

Knight’s catch measured over 40 inches in length with a 27-inch girth.

The fish is estimated to be between 50 and 60 years old.
