CANDIA, N.H. — The family of Craig Clouatre, a 40-year-old married, father of four, is mourning his death after he was killed in a suspected grizzly bear attack in Yellowstone National Park.
“We loved him to death,” David Clouatre, Craig’s father told me. “We’re going to miss him. He was a joy to have.”
Craig Clouatre was a Massachusetts native who settled down in Montana with his wife, Jamie, and raised four children.
Last Friday, Craig’s remains were found in Yellowstone, a day after he went missing.
On Thursday, Craig and another hiker separated.
Authorities think a grizzly bear fatally attacked Craig.
David Clouatre tells me his son was an experienced hiker who first learned to hike as a child in New Hampshire’s White Mountains.
Last week, David said, he warned Craig to be careful on his upcoming hike.
“Last conversation I had, I said, ‘be careful.’ I think I mentioned the bears are out. They’re not like the black bears up here in New Hampshire. A grizzly will go after anybody,” he said.
A GoFundMe for Craig’s devastated family has already raised tens of thousands of dollars.
Craig’s wife, Jamie, said in a statement, “…I loved him with every single fiber of me...he was a vital part of me and our children and it is going to be a struggle for the rest of our lives. To say we are broken is an understatement.”
