SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Armed men stormed the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, Calif. Wednesday, shooting multiple people.
The Inland Regional Center serves people with developmental disabilities. The center works to identify and eliminate barriers for individuals with disabilities and their families. They offer one-on-one programs, as well as group activities. They offer programs by age, starting at birth.
Its Facebook page says that the center employs 670 people and serves more than 30,200 people and their families throughout the San Bernardino and Riverside counties. It is unclear how many staff members or people receiving services were inside the building at the time of the shooting, which was around noon PST.
According to California Department of Developmental Services, regional centers like the Inland Regional Center are nonprofit private corporations that contract with the state to provide or coordinate services and supports. There is no charge for the diagnosis and eligibility assessment, and the person must have a disability that begins before their 18th birthday and it must be expected to continue indefinitely. People at risk for having a child with a disability may also receive services for genetic testing.
On the Inland Regional Center's Facebook page, it says the center had Santa visit Tuesday, a Holiday Sweater party scheduled for Wednesday and a Winter Dance scheduled for Saturday.
