BROCKTON, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – More than a week after a cargo ship went missing in the Bahamas, local families have given up hope that their loved ones will return.

Mary Shevory says her daughter, Mariette Wright, used to love visiting her in Brockton before the tragedy struck.

“Imagine you swallowed a large flat rock, and it landed right here. and it won't move and it stays right over my heart,” she said.

Wright was one of several sailors with local ties aboard El Faro, which went missing after sailing into the middle of Hurricane Joaquin.

Her mother said she isn’t mad at the captain for that decision.

“I don't think it ever occurred to him it would turn into a hurricane. He had been through hurricanes before,” Sherory said.

The ship was last heard from on Oct. 1.

“We were so full of hope. We were ultra-naïve. But that was all we had to hang onto,” Sherory said. “I know the ship sank.”

Now, Mary says it's time to begin the healing process after losing her middle child.

"I'm so proud of you my little girl, my tough, rough creampuff. I know you died doing exactly what you loved," she said.

Two of the other sailors on board El Faro were graduates of the Mass. Maritime Academy.
