ANDOVER, Mass. — A two-car crash closed down Interstate 93 in Andover and sent four people to the hospital Friday afternoon.
Police say a vehicle was stopped in the breakdown lane of I-93 north in Andover when another vehicle slammed into it.
The two people in the car that was struck - a mother and her 5-year-old son - were seriously injured. The driver and passenger of the other vehicle were also injured. All four people were taken by ambulance to Lawrence General Hospital. The boy was later taken by medical helicopter to a Boston hospital.
All northbound lanes and one southbound lane were shut down during the rescue and initial investigation.
The crash remains under investigation by Massachusetts State Police.
