MAYNARD, Mass. — A man was arrested Wednesday morning for allegedly putting an explosive device on a home's porch.
Police said Monday morning a homeowner on Demars Street called 911 after finding a suspicious package on his front porch. Officials said it was a sophisticated device, with motors and a power supply. It was attached to a propane tank and put inside a Sudbury Farms shopping bag. Police said the homeowner picked it up, and as soon as he saw the propane tank, he put it down and called police.
After assessing the situation, the State Police Bomb Squad rendered the device safe.
Using fingerprint evidence, the bomb squad tied the package to 51-year-old William O'Neil, said police.
Police arrested O'Neil early Wednesday morning and officers executed a search warrant at his residence. He's charged with placing an explosive device and possessing an explosive device.
O'Neil is a supervisor for the DPW in Weston and the town said they have put him on leave until the charges are resolved.
He is also suspected to a similar incident on Oct. 29 when a suspicious package was found near a home on Walcott Street in Maynard. The bomb squad determined it was not explosive in nature.
