Searchers recover body of Canton man missing on Reservoir Pond

Searchers recovered a man's body from Reservoir Pond around 2 a.m. Thursday morning after a search that lasted through the night.

Police identified the deceased as James Pascal, 26, of Canton.

Canton Police got a call about the man struggling in the water around 8 p.m. Wednesday. Witnesses said he was fishing from a boat, not far from shore, when he somehow ended up in the water and began struggling.

When rescuers arrived, Pascal was no longer visible in the water and a search began.

Local and State Police searched with helicopters, a dive team and on the shore, but the murky water and darkness after nightfall made the search difficult.

Canton Police Chief Ken Berkowitz said the victim and his family are well known in the town. "Our hearts are broken for the family, in a town where everybody knows everybody."

The search was unusual in that first responders rarely continue to search bodies of water for victims after sundown, but they did in this incident.

Police are calling it an accidental drowning.
