WOBURN, Mass. — Police continue to investigate after a man allegedly entered the state Republican Party headquarters in Woburn on Wednesday, where witnesses said he made verbal threats against staffers.
Woburn Police Department Lt. Paul Carpenter on Friday said a written report about the incident is not yet complete, calling the investigation “still ongoing.” The person entered MassGOP’s office and left of his own accord before police arrived, Carpenter said.
In a press release, MassGOP alleged that the man who walked into the party’s office accused staffers of being “fascists” and threatened to “come back with a weapon.” The party also alleged that the man sought to take employees’ photos and accosted them for not wearing masks.
Asked if police believe there is an ongoing safety threat or would station additional patrols near the MassGOP office, Carpenter replied, “No, nothing right now.”
MassGOP Chair Jim Lyons, who was not at the office at the time, said in a statement that he sees the incident as part of a broader trend about COVID-19 response.
“People are done with the government overreach,” Lyons said. “They want to be able to live their lives normally again, and people like this individual who threatened my staff today are obviously distraught over the likelihood of that happening.”
