Drastic weather fluctuations complicating things on the ski slopes

WESTON, Mass. — With 32 days until spring, we are already seeing some drastic weather changes. In the last couple of weeks, we’ve seen in some cases up to 50-degree changes.

The up and down temps may cause more potholes and water main breaks. It may even make you forget to close your sunroof while it’s snowing, but if you are in the ski business, it can be tough.

“If the temperature goes up we have to be ready to close up and hibernate again,” said Stuart Johnstone of Great Brook Ski Touring Center. “Some winters we don’t open. Other winters we are here for a couple of months and it’s great skiing.”

Ski resorts we spoke with that make their own snow say they lose a little business when it gets warm out.

“With the fluctuating weather for me, I just switch skiing to running,” said Arlington resident Sarah Lynch.

“The clothing is very different and so is the wax,” said Josephine Lynch-Shaddock.

But those who rely on mother nature say they lose a lot of business.

“We had a couple of nice days of dry cold powder which for skiers is best and then we got up to 40 or so,” said Johnstone. “Now things are back to reality and we’ll weather this and be ready for the next time.”

But there may not be too many next times since there are only 32 days left in winter.

‘We’ve had a short season,” said Johnstone. “We’ve only been open 13 days this year so far. The average is something like 34 per season so we are hoping for more.”

This weekend is president day weekend and it would normally be one of the bigger ski weekends of the year. We’ll see if the weather cooperates.
