MARTHA'S VINEYARD, Mass. — A Martha Vineyard's student has taken home one of the highly competitive Google Science Fair awards.
Charlie Fenske takes a ferry every day to attend Falmouth Academy, where he pursues his passion for science and engineering.
Charlie won the Virgin Galactic Pioneer Award for his project on making rockets more efficient and cheaper.
He designed a synthetic jet propulsion system that removes the need for extra metal parts, making the rocket weigh significantly less and need less fuel. Using this invention, scientists can launch rockets more successfully.
Charlie, 16, has been designing rockets since he was in the sixth grade and has recently started building range model UAV airplanes and drones.
"I always try to optimize everything I encounter, which is the basis of engineering," he wrote in his bio.
He aspires to attend MIT or CalTech to pursue a Ph.D in Aerospace Engineering. He hopes to work at a commercial space flight company like Vigrin Galactic, SpaceX or Boeing. Eventually, Then, I plan to start my own commercial Aerospace company.
Charlie won a $15,000 scholarship for his prize, a year-long mentorship and a trip to tour Virgin Galatic.
