DALTON, N.H. — A New Hampshire State Police Trooper involved in a fatal shooting on Dec. 23 in Dalton, New Hampshire, has been identified by Attorney General Gordon J. MacDonald.
On Saturday, MacDonald identified Trooper Matthew Merrill as the officer who shot and killed Mark Clermont, 45, on Wednesday night.
The fatal shooting happened after 9 p.m. Trooper Merrill stopped Clermont on Bridge Hill Road and there was an exchange of gunfire between the two, according to a statement from MacDonald’s office.
Clermont was pronounced dead at the scene from apparent gunshot wounds.
Merrill was taken to a local hospital with gunshot wounds where he remains in stable condition, MacDonald said on Saturday.
Merrill has been a police officer for roughly 11 years, MacDonald said. He joined the New Hampshire State Police in 2012 after serving with the Grantham Police Department from 2008 to 2012.
There’s a GoFundMe for Merrill, which has raised almost $100,000.
