Man dies after paragliding crash off Plum Island

NEWBURYPORT, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com/AP) -- A 49-year-old from Rhode Island died Saturday following a paragliding crash near Plum island.

Newburyport police tell FOX 25 the man crashed between 50 and 60 yards from the shore. The U.S. Coast Guard pulled the man from the water just after 5 p.m. He was pronounced dead at 6:30 p.m. at a local hospital.

Brian Fleming, command duty officer for Coast Guard Sector Boston, said the man was in the water about 20 to 30 minutes from the time the engine on his paraglider quit until he was pulled from the water by a Coast Guard lifeboat.

Newburyport police say two of the man's friends tried to go into the water to save him, but retreated because of the cold.

Two others who rushed into the water to help the man received medical treatment due to the frigid water temperatures.

The victim's identity was not released Saturday.
