Man convicted in serious Arborway crash sentenced

BOSTON — A man convicted last month of causing a 2013 crash in Boston that seriously injured two people was sentenced to two years in a house of correction, with one to be served.

Twenty-year-old Nikolas Papadopoulos was found guilty in January of negligent operation of a motor vehicle. Police said Papadopoulos was speeding on the Arborway in Jamaica Plain when his SUV hit an oncoming pickup truck. The pickup driver, Kevin Cellucci, was paralyzed. Fourteen-year-old Mark Delamerer, a passenger in the SUV, suffered a traumatic brain injury.

Members of the Celucci spoke at the sentencing hearing about how much they have lost.

“All his dreams of one day playing sports in college or becoming a Boston police officer have been taken away,” Sheila Delamerer, Mark's mother said.

In court Wednesday, Papadopoulos was sentenced to two years in a house of correction with one year to serve and the balance suspended for five years. He was also ordered to complete 2,000 hours of community service.

“It was a very difficult case and horrible for all those involved, but the sentences imposed on Kevin Celluci and Mark Delmare are life sentences,” Shawn O’Rourke, an attorney for the Celucci family, said.

Papadopoulos initially agreed to plead guilty, but changed his mind when a judge said he would face a year in jail.
