Court hearing for man accused in Weymouth killings continued to Sept. 19

BOSTON — The man accused of shooting and killing a Weymouth Police sergeant and a woman drinking coffee on her porch was due in court for a probable cause hearing Wednesday in Quincy District Court.

Emmanuel Lopes, who is facing two counts of murder for the July 15 shooting deaths of 42-year-old Weymouth Sergeant Michael Chesna and 77-year-old Vera Adams, did not appear in court or by video conference.

Lopes' appearance was waived and the prosecution and defense both agreed to continue the probable cause hearing to Sept. 19.

Chesna responded to reports of Lopes’ driving on July 15 and reportedly found Lopes as he was throwing a rock through a window in the Burton Terrace neighborhood.

Prosecutors allege Lopes picked up a large rock and hit Chesna with it, knocking him to the ground. Lopes then picked up Chesna's gun and shot him ten times as he stood over him.

Police say Lopes then stopped in one backyard and shot through the window, hitting and killing Adams as she sat in her sunroom drinking coffee.

Lopes pleaded not guilty to the charges at a July 18 court appearance where he was wheeled into the courtroom wearing a hospital gown. He has been held without bail since his arrest.
